question: how much silver do you all think is still out there? people have been getting halves for I don't know how long, so do any of you have any estimates about when this should all dry up?

I don't think it will dry up for a very long time. Some of it is stolen collections that are cashed in, and that will never stop. Also, some people are facing very bad economic times, and just need food more than silver.

I think it has pretty much dried up in my area. That and the competition has grown by leaps and bounds over the last year so finding halves has been very very hard for me this past year. Only five silver halves from banks and one silver dime from the wife's cash register is all the silver I have gotten this year.

My silver find average is very low. I calculated my average to .0004. What I'm saying is I find 1 silver something in $250.00. I like the hunt so I keep searching. I have searched well over $600,000.00 in coins over my 6 years of searching. I agree that more are searching than ever! I think it has to do with wall street talking about silver sooo much!

yeah it's just kind of sad though bc it's fun and there won't be much of a reason to do it once it dries up.

Uh, and why didn't they dry up back in '79-80? Do you realize the massive hoards that were pulled, cashed and melted?

I think there is still plenty in the wild....although they are a limited source, people are still pulling them.

Back in 1979 silver prices peaked near $50 an oz. I was roll hunting then and finds became slim, like they are now. The US was also in a recession. Over time, silver coin, mostly halves, found their way back into circulation or bank vaults, due to low silver value.

Some of you guys are too serious man...unless it is a major source of income for you, why not just have fun with it? I get frustrated too sometimes, but from my experience, when you have fun with the hobby of roll hunting and keep an open mind eventually something will turn up and you'll get lucky...just my Two Cents though, some may disagree. And another thing, how old are some of you guys? Just wondering.

I'm 25. I started roll searching when I was about 10 looking for old cents. When I was in college I got into roll hunting heavy because I was to broke to buy coins. I keep searching now because I enjoy the hunt and the chance to find something awesome!
