I don't know much about grading coins but I found this half dollar tonight using my MXT. Wondered what you guys think it might be worth. Thanks for looking. I tried uploading using the green camera but it doesn't allow anything over 90kb and even when I compress the images it just acts like it wants to reject them no matter what. So here's a link to where I posted it somewhere else.

Certainly a great find and it doesn't appear to have been in the ground long. With the damage/cleaning it should still be worth $50 or so.

Very nice coin looks like AU details with a bit of damage on the Reverse. Probably a $300 coin I'd recommend keeping it though since it is such a sweet find (!)

Oh I'm definitely keeping it. I could never sell my best find ever. It means too much to me to just sell it for cash I'll never see again. I think it's been in the ground for a very long time. I found this along side very heavily patina-ed civil war bullets and other old coins. IHs and such. Silver holds up very well in the ground. I've dug many silver coins.

Did you clean it after unearthing the coin or was that exactly how it was found? Curious if it might be original condition I'm really not sure how 150 year old silver looks when it gets dug up (!)

Not sure where everybody's getting their values? $300?

This is a common-date that's damaged. A cleaned ANACS EF45 sold recently on Heritage for $79. I'd put this one below that, but still worth $50 to $60.

This 1848-O went for $150 at auction last year. Much higher wear, much more harshly cleaned. Was graded EF45 Details Cleaned/Damaged by NCS:

As an FYI: This coin is a great metal detecting find for sure but it's not a rare or scarce date and goes for under $200 in problem-free XF.

Here's a few recent auctions for 1848-O halves:

Sep-2010 $79 XF45 ANACS Heritage
Sep-2010 $173 Genuine (MS details-altered surfaces) PCGS Heritage
Aug-2010 $173 AU50 ANACS Heritage
Jan-2010 $100 XF45 ANACS Heritage

OK I'll concede this argument I think your $60 is closer to the mark based on that more recent Heritage data! Nice coin, though and a great find... !
Rest in Peace

People on ebay will still pay well over $60 for any pre-1853 half in good condition.

I do think his coin has AU detail. It would come back from a TPG as damaged but not necessarily cleaned; light conservation is seldom a major problem. That damage is fairly minor and does not seriously detract from eye appeal.

So my logic was a 300 numismedia starting point minus 100 for the issues as a net retail, but not auction, price. Auctions can be unpredictable and this year that date does seem to be in light demand. Grading is highly subjective so an ANACS slabbing might be good to nail down whether this is ef or au detail
