I have these two unique coins that I inherited a long time ago. The large cent is apparently 185* something. I think 1854. I had two different jewelers to take a look at these coins to see if they had been fabricated in any way and they both assured me they have not been. Anyone have any information on this kind of coin or even value? The second is a Half Dime 1847 that is not damaged but has extra material in the coin. Also has some kidnof cross stamp in the coin. My Grandad carried it in his wallet for years because he thought it was a good luck charm etc... Any info on these would be great!!

The Half Dime would be considered damaged and is pretty worn, so it's value is minimal - maybe $10 or so?

The large cent is in fairly nice condition except that the 4 in the date is very weak - most likely caused by a Grease Filled Die when the coin was originally minted. Grease Filled Dies are of some interest but are not particularly rare. That coin is maybe in the $30-40 range for value.

Both are nice pieces of history - especially given the stories involved and how you obtained them. That is where their true value lies!

Welcome to the forum!

I like that large cent, You'd probably get $40 on ebay or just under $30 in a coin shop.

I'm not sure what to make of that Half Dime. I can't see the picture well - could we be looking at a Cud on the reverse? As per the value, it wouldn't really matter because the cross scratched in to the obverse makes it somewhat hard to find a buyer.

Yeah, the reverse of that Half-Dime is fascinating. It almost looks like a terminal-state, crushed die.
Rest in Peace

Half Dime might be worth $3 or $4 instead of $2 because its a better date (on ebay), large cent I'd say about $30.

I did forget to mention a little something on the Half Dime. The story that was handed down was that this was the first one printed and it was used to align the stamp (via the cross) and that is why the entire coin was not pressed all the way. the rest of the coin(non printed parts) is thicker than the printed parts. Coin is not damaged in any way expect for pocket wear. It may look bent but I assure you it is not.
