That's a fantastic price! However, make sure the coins are not all hazed. Many of them have been improperly stored and the coins have been ruined. Also, make sure they are in fact SILVER coins. Many scammers have taken out the silver and replaced the coins with clad versions.

Quote:jbuck: If you want to complete a Silver Proof Statehood Quarter set, a 1999 Silver Proof Set will have to be broken apart. Not necessarily: I have all fifty of the 1999-2008 Silver Proof State Quarters and I didn't break up any Proof Sets. That's because my Quarters are still in their OGP lenses, in the boxes of their respective unbroken Silver Proof Sets. Of course, if you want to put your fifty Silver Proof State Quarters into a Dansco , that's when you would be breaking up 1999-2003 full Silver Proof Sets.

Semantics, my friend... You are still breaking that lens away from its sibling!

But since the lens can simply be opened and closed without damage the set can always be put back together as long as you don't discard the holder. Breaking up a set implies that it is a one way deal and once done can't be undone.

Quote: Isn't it always said to get the key date or hard to find coins first, when trying to build a set?
A very good rule of thumb, key dates usually rise in value faster than common issues, but it is not absolute. You would have been out about $150 or so if you had purchased the 1999 silver set about four or five years ago. The value of the set has been steadily dropping for the past couple years but it will always carry a premium over the other issues.

This proof set looks OK. No toning or hazing. No indication of any tampering. The corners of the box aren't as sharp and square as they are when new. After that much time I'm sure it may have been shown to a few people. I think what I may do is collect the rest of the silver proofs in their original plastic holders and not break them out. That idea may change as I start collecting the rest. If I do put them in an album, what in the best way to handle proof coins so you are not disappointed with scratches and finger marks in the future.

The best way, leave them alone...
I too collect proof/mint sets and have every set silver included from 1963 to date, I am NOT about to open these sets to touch the coins, they look great every time I open the boxes and love the ALL original concept. I do believe the or one of the reasons for the sets popular views are the fact the set was the first of the quarter series to be silver and as such a collectible, along with the other stated reasons, I paid 190 for my set a year ago, I am not sorry I have it, I do collect them and still have a long road to complete the type set, I did NOT start with the " keys", which in my opinion are the earlier sets mint sets 1947 and proof sets 1936, but like most other things I collect, I look forward to the passion ahead, good luck in your collecting choices......PS, I would suggest looking very closely at any coins before buying, as stated prior, many scams going on, the switching etc....
