I just picked up "strike it rich with pocket change" and opened up 12 quarter rolls I had waiting to go to the bank to look for anything listed in the book. I do not understand the reasoning for keeping the 1999 P&D (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut) since I found 11 of those in 12 rolls. Why does the book say keep them? Thanks

Michael

Probably because 1999 was the first year for the State Quarters.

Keep in mind that you only need to "keep" the ones in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
With average wear in general circulation....they're only worth .25 cents face value. ....

You'd just be wasting your time to "hoard" all of these I'm afraid.

With out knowing exactly what it says in the book, it would be hard to tell why
they say that.

But .. many of the early State Quarters are hard to find in better/higher grades.
This has been gone over many times on this forum.

Bottom line >> in my opinion >> is
Collecting quarters from 1999 and up, while is fun to put sets together.
To have sets that are going to increase in value, you neeed to have
coins with the highest grade you can find.

As Eaglefoot says circulated State Quarters will only be worth 25 cents.
Of course there may be one or two exception like error coins and the
WI high and low leaf.

A example of what I mean is take a look at a price guide, like numismedia.
It will show that Georgia quarters in MS67 or better have listed value of
over $100. There are several that fall into this category, because they are
hard to find in higher grades.

In the future there will be many collectors wanting to put together a set
of quarters, the ones they will pay the most for will be high grade UNC
coins.

Thanks for the replies. I do not have the book in front of me but as I recall it didn't really say why to keep them but I do remember it saying something along the lines of value being around $1 for AU and $2-$3 for UNC. I didn't figure circulated coins were worth keeping but I wanted to ask here before putting them back into circulation.
