I have a dump bank down the street that I can walk to with a coin counter that is free for account holders which is nice. It has always been really slow because it jams up if I pour my nickels in too fast. I guess I can live with that problem but last week I dumped 350 half dollars and it only counted 341. They even had the machine worked on and checked for accuracy within the month. I mentioned it to a manager and he said they would credit my account in a couple days if the armored truck service finds out the bags don't come out even. He took my phone number and account info along with what I claimed to have been miscounted. It's been over a week and I haven't heard anything back. I rarely get halves, and nickels have always been accurate so this is the first time I have had this issue. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you handle it?

The bank rips me off when I find the occasional penny in a nickel roll. I can laugh that off, but an inaccurate coin counter is just unfair.

I've gotten two dimes in the last two bags of pennies from my banks counter in the last two weeks. I'll bet there are more problems than we realize.

You need to walk away with your halves if that type of error occurs never ever take an IOU.

I'm always shocked to hear how many people actually trust any of the coin couters. Myself, being suspicious of machines that deal with my money, I usually take the time to count change prior to dumping in a banks system. About 25% of the time I've been cheated but how do you prove it? You can protest to the bank but they'll just say YOU miscounted. Or we will check into the mancines accuracy. So why not just say to bad. I think all banks work on the system that if you had a loss due to their machines, it would compensate for the times you received to much and said nothing.
I know no one or few will actually do this but from now on count your change prior to dumping into a bank.

You can bet the machines will always undercount, too. Have to love banks... <sigh>

I used to dump $1000 of halves every week (minus the silver I found). I would say that around 80% of the time, the count was accurate, and only around 2% of the time was it short more then 2 halves. It was also long by a half or two about 2% of the time.

I actually find myself getting an extra couple dollars more often than getting ripped off a couple bucks. The machines in my area like me. lol

If you feel that one of these machines have cheated you call the Sealer of Weights and Measures for the municipality in which it is located. Many of them don't even realize that these are covered under their jurisdiction. These machines are counting devices used for public transactions and as such fall under their jurisdiction. Just tell the sealer that the machine shorted you and could he/she please check it out and get back to you.

as a buyer of the bags from the count machines, I've seen some really wierd stuff.

one branch seems to have the machine being spot on while others are not so much. in the branch that was spot on, the dimes contained fewer silver and almost no canadian. The quarter bags (2) were spot on correct containing 1 silver washington and 1 silver canadian.

The other branch is a little less accurate and I've brought it to their attention. One bag of dimes ($1000) not only contained 23 pennies, 2 buttons, a safety pin and a picture hanger, but also was short by $3 in dimes. Several other bags from them of dimes almost always contain anywhere from 1 to 25 pennies, nickel bags almost always contain 1 or 2 pennies. Penny bags seem to include a dime or two.

The branch that I deposit to runs them through their machine and I take their count as accurate. I figure any inaccuracies in the long run will likely work out to be a wash (win some, lose some) and I'm not about to sit here and count all that I give them. I have a rough idea and so long as we are close, thats fine. The last time I gave them stuff it ended in 4 cents. I asked them and they said "must have been 4 pennies". But I knew that there had only been dimes, so the machine counted 4 of them wrong. I told the teller that, but she assured me the machine was accurate and that I must have thrown them in there...

I used to drop off an average persons amount of change in this same counter and I counted it prior to dropping it off, and sure enough it goofed a few dimes for pennies.

I didn't know that they were subject to the weights and measures people - that's good to know though. Based on the condition of several coins, I'm not surprised when things get counted wrong. Some of the pennies in the bag of dimes were shaved to be the size of dimes (yup just like the guy who got pardoned), and some were just rough shape. In the nickels you see some that look like hell.

So are they 100% accurate - I would say NO WAY. Do I think that their level of accuracy fall within a reasonable amount considering what they are up against - yes. I think its a risk we take as roll hunters that what we buy site un seen might not be what we think it is. It also might be what they think it is (it might be silver). Every branch I've spoken to said that their machine is verified and serviced at least once a month.
