I am going to take some of my profits from roll hunting silver and start buying some coins as an investment. I spoke iwth the guy at the coin shop, he is very nice and I trust him, and he recommended buying Key Date coins. I asked about maybe buying proof sets or something and he said Key Dates was the best way to go. Any opinions? I don not feel the need to get anything in particular, though a set of Morgan Proof coisn would be nice.

The dealer is giving you wise advice. Key date hold value while the bullion markets go up and down. But the best advice is to buy what you like.

Don't waste your time with proof/mint sets. Most of the older sets just have not gone up much and for what the mint wants now for sets, I would consider elsewhere. Key dates are always going to be good as long as you can get them at the right price. Make sure you are referring to a greysheet at the minimum.

I agree 100% with buying key date coins. I also recommend Carson City coins. The bullion craze is taking the heat of the numismatic market in many cases, which should reflect in the cost of these coins.

I have only been collecting off and on for a few years now and I found out early that I had to make a decision with my collecting: Do you want to collect as an investment only, or do you want to collect for collecting sake and have fun with it? It did not take me long to realize that I was too broke to afford many key date coins and I had more fun putting sets together. So if you are looking at investing and have the money...go for it!

Exactly! If you want, fill in later. If it's just for investment, stay with the Key Dates.

I think certified Errors are a nice investment too. They seem to increase in value pretty nicely over the years. These can be more rare than some key dates. There is a smaller market for errors, but people do spend the money to get what they want.

I think key dates and errors are the way I am going to go for investing. I will fill in books with roll finds for fun. I would rather spend money on something of value rather tyhan buy a coin that will never really be worth much. I like to roll search so I can keep busy and have alot if fun with that.
