Sometimes people have notes professionally cleaned. They soak them to remove stains, grime, etc. One of the side effects is blurry or lightened printing. I could only imagine the size of the note could be affected as well.

Quote: Especially with notes prior to 1957, plate size was sometimes inconsistent to as much as 1/8" The above is neither guess, or speculation....(it is fact).

Well, thanks for saying so Billie, but I really am not so much into small size notes.....rather, I am a fan of the large size....

Keeping with the main thrust of the original post....Has everyone noticed that traditionally, all small size notes have dramatically smaller back plates than face plates (both horizontally and vertically)? Why is that, do you suppose?

zeewool,
Beautiful pics of your notes.
In reference to your question, I find it ironic that as the US population's backsides have gotten larger, the back of our notes have gotten smaller.
