Second, how does Zinc rot? I thought it was like nickle and used in anti-corrosion baths.
By being exposed to oxygen and moisture. Yes it is used in anti corrosion applications.....as a sacrificial metal. It corrodes and in doing so protects the other metals. When two dissimilar metals are in contact with an electrolyte present to act as a current carrier (water) it creates a battery, current flows and the more reactive metal corrodes away. Zinc is more reactive than most metals and it is cheap so it makes a good sacrificial metal to prevent corrosion of other metals.
