I'd like to see some pics. The 'coin' was made into a locket? Those are rare. I've only personally seen one in a pawn shop, made of 2 Morgan obverses. Fella called it a snuff box.

From what this oldtime collector has garnered, the term "opium dollar" and similar names are simply flights of fancy, intended to add a sense of mystery to what were actually coin lockets for photos. Two coins were used in the process, and the large Trade dollars were most often used. (The use of genuine gold coins would certainly be a more prized and valuable collectible.) Back when these coins circulated, the late 1800's, opium was not a controlled substance, so there was no need to hide or smuggle it within a coin. These lockets may well have been produced by student jewelers, machinists, honing their skills; akin, to a test of their progress in the art. The Trade dollar lockets will typically sell in the $200-$400 range, depending upon their condition and artful design.

Would like to see picture also. All of my good knowledgable coin dealers are long gone.I saw quite afew in the 1960'-1970's.They were proported as opium lockets.I have a copy of a book intitled Opium War's.I'll check to see if there is any mention of these.
