I've spent a couple of hours searching on the net and I finally located this wealth of knowledge site. A friend got this coin from her grandfather. Any info would be appreciated.

The coin appears to be Venetian in design and from the middle ages but I have not been able to track down who it is. I'll keep looking.

The large fleur-de-lys gives this one away - it's a gold florin of the Italian city-state of Florence. St John the Baptist, patron saint of the city, is on the obverse. Wikipedia article.

Whether the coin is still worth much, as a coin, depends on whether the jeweller that encased it damaged it while doing so. Despite being so old, these coins often aren't worth too much more than their bullion value because they swere struck with more or less exactly the same design for over 200 years.
