I have an old type set I tried putting together as a kid... it was a Whitman album and I still have it to this day. I managed to get most of it done with my junior high lawnmowing money, and a few of the coins I couldn't afford then I later picked up in grad school... and thus it was completed... minus that Trade dollar slot.

I'd like to fill it now. In keeping with the worn down, full-of-holes look of the other coins, plus the fact that the album is not in good shape, it sure would be nice to find an authentic, but fair-to-AG-with-holes Trade dollar. And therein lies the problem. I can't trust ebay. At shows, the only Trade dollars are nice specimens in slabs and $500 price tags. Dealers I've spoken with say they avoid filler Trade dollars because they can't sell them; here I am, a buyer, but there are no coins to buy.

Any suggestions on how/where I can track down a filler Trade dollar that is cheap and in exceptionally lousy yet authentic condition?

If you do not trust ebay, (I don't either), I would suggest you do a Google search of coin auctions and coin dealers in the country of your choice on a once per month basis. The countries that such dealers and auctions that I would recommend are the ones that are most prominent amongst membership on this site: U.S.A., Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Dealers and auction houses have a professional reputation to protect.

In trolling through the sales lists, you will eventually come up with a Trade dollar at the level of condition that you can afford and you may be happy with.

Nevertheless, it took me four years to finally get my Trade dollar in VF that I was happy with. It really depends on your attitude and patience. For me, I had a lot of fun on the way, as well as finding lots of other desirable coins for my collection.

I have seen a Trade dollar for $95 and another one (same shop) for $125. It was a very reputable shop so I wouldn't have been too worried about a fake. They were well worn of course, but still looked decent and would do the job, so those type of coins are out there.

Thanks both, and esp. spaceace for the source of inspiration :) I don't think much of some of the shops in my area, and the two that I do trust and enjoy working with have not had anything other than slabbed $500 items. I do have the means, and do plan to start a decent VF-to-BU type set at some point soon, but I want to finish this one off and I want to do it in the spirit in which it was built. That means worn, cheap, and full of character. I'll bide my time, but after quite a bit of searching, I've been feeling irked that these coins are hidden away somewhere.

(Oh, and if anyone sees one at a shop or location near Detroit, do hollar!)

Once you get 50 posts and can sell/buy/trade. Let me know and I can check on them and probably still get one if you want.

You might find something in the neighbor you're looking for on the Tuesday Teletrade auctions. They have many lower end certified items up for auction on Tuesdays.
