Nice coin. My suggestion would be: Send it to be graded. ANACS will grade the gold pretty straight up.The resale value will be much higher.

Might be MS but should at least grade AU55 for detail. The parallel lines around the torch and olive branch look like hairline scratches but we would need sharper photos to make a better determination. If it has been cleaned I don't think it would be a good investment to pay for grading.

Looks AU55 possibly cleaned -- worth about its weight in Gold :)

So you fellows could tell from the scans? Go home, young man.ALWAYS>>>>> get gold slabbed.Send it to ANACS. They are cool on gold and will not dog it if by chance it's been cleaned or something. It's worth more than it's weight in gold.

Sure never hurts it would at least establish the coin as genuine for potential buyers.
In AU, a 1909 $20 Gold sells for its weight. Sorry to disappoint (Teletrade NOV 21, NGC-58 $20, $1300 realized price)

Quote: So you fellows could tell from the scans? If you couldn't tell by those pictures of the branch with hairlines all over it then you are in the wrong hobby. it looks to be whizzed to me with all those lines going in the same direction and they are small uniformed lines like what would happen when whizzed

I am no expert and have started a St. Gaudens collection. Bryan, are you sure they're not flow lines? Except for those two areas, the rest of the coin looks pretty clean. The lines I think you're referring to, don't look as uniform as I've seen in whizzing before.

I have never seen flow lines look like that, I had a whizzed coin at one time and it looked exactly like that to me. if you look closely at the "LIB" picture you will notice it shows the exact same thing so its not just in that one area
Edit: actually every picture that is of the Obverse shows the same thing. look beside the head and body of Lady Liberty, it shows the same thing there. If its not whizzed its definitely cleaned on the Obverse, can't tell about the reverse but the Obverse is definitely not "flow lines" in my opinion

I have never heard of "whizzing", I think/thought they were flow lines. I have not cleaned my coins. My dad was born in 1894, they were his & were given to me on my 18th b-day. I just turned 48. They have been kept in flips & sealed air-tight container. Thanks for the input!

High AU range. Someone could have cleaned it in the past. Without the coin in hand, we could only go by your photos.

My guess is that it has been cleaned. It doesn't look whizzed to me, but the nature of the hairlines make it look cleaned. I really doubt those are die flow lines.
I agree with Fenton that it is a good idea to send it to ANACS. It may not increase the resale value, but it will be MUCH easier to sell since folks will be confident that it is genuine; so you will vastly increase the number of potential buyers.
For a $1400 coin, I think it is worth it for that reason alone.

Those are not flow lines but may well be die polish lines. If you get out a magnifier, it should be easy to tell the difference:
1. Die polish lines will be raised off the surface of the coin 2. Hairlines, which often show a cleaning, will be recessed into the surface
Die polish lines can be dramatic and will not keep the coin from achieving high (MS-66) type grades. Your photos aren't quite large or sharp enough for me to tell the difference.

No way to grade this without much much higher resolution photos.

I just read an interesting article on Late Stage Die Wear. Near the olive branch might just qualify. I'd send it off to see.
