I might have to take this out of the 2x2 and get grade opinions. It's really nice!

Is this the D over S variety? I think it might be!

Does anyone know how a D mintmark would get over the S to begin with? I can't find anything on it.

Good find Scooby ......

According to Q. David Bowers there are an estimated 400,000 of these 1938 D/S minted .... with at least six varieties known of the over-punched MM.

Mr. Bowers goes on to say ..... paraphrase here ....

One theory of how they came to be is that as dies were being prepared for the 1938 year someone realized coins would be minted in Denver and not San Francisco ....... several (6?) of the reverse dies were sent from SF to Denver where the MM was over-punched with a "D".

I believe you have one of these six varieties ...... great for you.

You can read more about this coin in Mr. Bowers book "Buffalo and Jefferson nickels"

Thanks for your insight David!

So, six varieties...hmmm.

I need to learn more about these. Because, I think I might know where another one is.

Are they all equal in value? Or would "stronger" varieties command more of a premium?

Cool find.

It is not the one in the CherryPickers' Guide which would be a D/D/D/S.
You could try going to CONECA's website to figure out which one.

here is the site address.

http://www.conecaonline.org/content...alorpms.html

(they only show five D/S, but 10 D/D)
