1859 Indian cent, Judd 227 pattern cent. This is the ornamental shield, and it appears on the reverse of the Flying Eagle cent (population ~ 200), on the 1858 Indian cent patterns (pop ~ 105 to 135) and the 1859 Indian cent as you see here (pop ~ 20).

Hey, who squished the shield? They dropped it so hard the bottom curled up.

I like that shield design. I have it listed as Judd 212 though.

echizento - You're right to associate the Judd 212 with that reverse, but J212 is that reverse on the 1858 pattern Indian (specifically the one with the narrow bust). The Judd 227 here is the 1859 with the ornamented shield.

I had an opportunity to buy one of these once, but I passed.
IHCs have an interesting group of patterns that show the design process.
Part of the reason may have been finding a design suitable for the harder CuNi planchets.

A very attractive coin. That must have cost you a few bucks! I'm very partial towards the Indian cent series and have many, but not an 1859 in that shape!

Thanks for the comments everyone. It'll definitely be a centerpiece of my Indian collection. I actually wanted the 1859 pattern with the regular shield, which was struck in 'high numbers' (I've heard up to 1,500) when THIS one came along at the same price. And since they only made about 20 of these with the ornamental shield, I couldn't say no.

One more thing - I purposely didn't put the grade on this one. It's in an Old Green Holder so I'm curious if you all think it might upgrade. Any guesses as to the grade?

How do pattern coin get out to the general public?
Just curious as to the history of a coin like this that is enormously rare
Seems like it should be worth HUGE money -- 1 0f 20 WOW
Super nice!

Grade - well I'm thinking the wear looking stuuf near the T in liberty
are smudges on the capsule. The fields are as clean as can be.
I don't know the eye appeal which is important when you're in the upper MS range but i'll
guess MS66 (assuming it's real pretty)
