Bronze is copper and tin. Brass is copper an zinc.
Until 1952, the penny had more tin than zinc. But after that (until the switch to copper-plated zinc in 1997) the predominant alloyed metal was zinc (0.98 copper/0.005 tin/0.015 zinc), which is more like red brass. But, it was always 95%-98% copper with both tin and zinc.
I never quite figured out why it was called bronze.
