can anyone help please. I know absolutely nothing about coins but have had a jar of coins since a small child. I've decided to find our what they are and sell them on if they are worth anything and let someone enjoy them. I've spent two days trawling ebay and so far have only listed two coins. I will probably be posting a lot of questions! Anyway sorry back to the subject above! I have found a one shilling token, silver? 'William Lomer & Son' with a ship on one side and 'Southampton token value one shilling' and a shield with a crown and a 'rose' on the other. I've tried to look it up, found a list of tokens, think it was issued around 1811, (no date on token)and it said rare. I can't find out anything else, is it worth snything, should I put on ebay? Any help appreciated, many thanks!

shnn4: First of all welcome to the CCF!

I think I have some good news for you. Your token is listed in Seaby's 'British Tokens and Their Values'. under Hampshire, No. 42, value 175 Pounds in EF condition. My edition was published in 1984. With average inflation of 3.5% over 27 years, 175 Pounds in 1984 values works out to be about 450 Pounds now.

Although I am in Australia, I do have a few Englsh silver tokens, all shillings. They are a fascinating part of British coinage history.

The next question springs to mind immediately: What condition is your silver token in? We of the CCF hope you could post some pictures of it, to be able to attempt a grading for you. Without a grading, no one can really tell you a value.

Should you put it up for sale on ebay? I would advise you to keep it, and hope that you are not tempted by the money you could get for it. You have kept it this long without knowing what it is, let's hope you continue to keep it and now knowing what it is.

Hampshire has a fond spot in my memory. I stayed with a very nice older couple in Gosport, opposite the Naval Base at Portsmouth. From my bedroom window, I could see HMS Victory in the far distance.

Sorry about the delay in my reply. I am usually a bit quicker than this, but I was feeling a bit 'off' in the last couple of days.

Thank you so much for replying and I hope you are feeling better!I was beginning to give up hope of finding out anything and it would have just gone back in the jar. Apart from looking 'greyish' as unpolished silver looks, it doesn't appear to have any wear at all. I will be happy to post pictures, oould you please advise me how to take a good close up picture with a digital camera?
As for selling, well I'm in a quandry, it would be nice to hold on to it but it would also be nice to let someone else enjoy it, plus we have a daughter getting married next year! Incidently the best man will be coming over from Australia!

Wouldn't it be nice if you can keep the token for yourself, to give a big encouragement to increase your numismatic interests? There a lot of folks in the CCF that are passionate about coins.

There is a specific part of the CCF Forum that deals with coin photography, under General Numismatic Discussion. Review that part of the Site to get a few ideas, suitable to your own camera, skills etc.

That info. is useful to anybody who wishes to post pictures of any small subject on any forum. If you have questions, start posting them!

My best wishes for your daughter's future marriage.

Tell the Best Man to bring some Australian tokens with him. There are lots of Oz tokens issued mid 19th century. They are as fascinating as the Brit. ones!
