Thanks a lot Coppercoins! I was almost sure neither were small date, but not quite enough to be fully sure, so thank you all. One day though ...................

I'll give you a hint.
In my lifetime I have been through over two million Lincoln cents. Of that two million Lincoln cents at least 20,000 of them were 1970S cents. Wanna know how many 1970S small date cents I have found in change through all that searching?
one.

Well, I figure that as long as people know there are still some, even just one, floating around out there, someone has to find it eventually, unless its been destroyed or dropped in Lake Winnipeg with the Sun Fish or tossed in the Grand Canyon, or a Tasmanian Devil ate it in Oz ... or heaven forbid, melted down ........ I'm the eternal optimist at the "I'm open to receiving" attitude level. Until I know none exist anymore, anything is possible Maybe one of my New Years Resolutions will be to be a 1970 S Lincoln Small Sate magnet. Yeah. That's it. That's what I'll do. You have heard that lightening can strike twice haven't you? Maybe you'll attract at least one more strike with a 1970 S small date in your lifetime ... I wish you would. But not before I find mine

I guess out on the west coast they are somewhat easier to find...
With regard to the mint sets - I have cherrypicked dozens of small date mint and proof sets over the years - it's like fishing in a barrel. The REAL finds are the ones that went into the few bags that went out into the public. In actuality I believe a full fourth of all the mint and proof sets issued had small date coins in them. The approximate ratio of large to small date coins in circulation was something like 100:1 back in 1970. It's likely to be greater than 1,000:1 now. At the rate it takes me to find 1,000 1970S cents in change I'd have to go through more than $100,000 face value to find one small date now...and chances are getting smaller every year.

Do we have a population number of total small dates minted? (I've got four rolls...all large dates. Not alot of 's' mints floating in the midwest.)

It looks like the 1970 S has some pretty nice prices for a FEW certain varieties and errors. I perk up as soon as I see one ... anticipa-a-a-tion ... :)

You will never find a mintage for small date coins since the mint saw them as the same issue as large dates. This is the case with all large/small date combinations. Even the seven different types of 1982 cent were tossed into one mintage batch. The ONLY way anyone could possibly get close is to find out the date that they changed over (if that's even possible), then get a die usage report and add up the numbers of coins minted on either side of that date. But even that would be an approximation at best.
The best way we have to determine mintage is to count up the numbers of the different types known/found and assume that's a representative sample of all coins minted for the issue. At last count, the approximation stood at 1 small date to 40 large dates...but I can tell you that number is WAY off. I believe it's a lot closer to 1 small date to 100 large dates as minted, and since they have been published throughout all this time, the current 'likelihood' of finding them is far different again. I was serious with my number of 1:1,000 small to large date...and I think that could be conservative. Like I said - of more than 2,000,000 Lincolns searched in my lifetime I have found exactly ONE small date in circulation.

I know I sure listen up when long term and always seriously searching collectors say anything about possible stats or anything else to do with collecting.
Lordy, I can't even picture 2 million Lincolns in my head. To find just one of them, well, zowie, thats a major needle in a haystack coin!

Bought a lot on ebay this spring that had (3) MS 70-S Small dates and one proof..other than that I found one when I was about 16. I sold it this spring because it had a fingerprint on it (probably mine)...sure not easy to find in circulation, but maybe it has something to do with luck
