Believe it or not, articles on the Net for beginners regarding best buys or collecting on a budget are few and far between. would some of the senior contributors n this forum care to comment on good silver buys?

Best buys on ebay I have been finding in bullion are modern silver proof sets at or below melt with shipping charges factored in.

Bars, rounds and eagles seem to sell above melt all the time. So I would stay away from them.

I've also bought many Silver Proof Sets for below melt at coin shows.

One time I bought ten Silver State Quarter Proof Sets for the same
price over face as circulated junk silver Washington quarters were going for.

Another good thing, the Proofs have the full .1808 oz. ASW of a new
90% Silver Quarter because they have no wear from circulation!

Melt value and ASW are a breeze with markn's calculator
(linked in my signature).

"Classic" pre-1999 Silver Proof Set: one each Dime, Quarter and Half-Dollar = 0.6148 oz ASW

State Quarter five-Quarter Silver Proof Set = 0.9042 oz ASW

Full Silver Proof Set, 1999-2008, 2010: one Dime, five Quarters, one Half-Dollar = 1.3382 oz ASW

I can usually find darkside silver below melt without looking very hard. I think that this is partly because people don't know what they are selling and partly because CV has not caught up to the bullion market.

I'm not out to buy silver but I did buy a couple 1994 Jefferson Coinage and Currency sets for under $40.00 recently mainly for the low mintage matte nickel and in the set is a 90% silver Jefferson Dollar and a $2.00 bill.
Taking that silver value at scrap and $2 cash for the bill included, I am only paying maybe 7 or 8 bucks for a possible $45.00+ nickel.
Maybe the modern commemorative is a place to look. Those pretty Washington Half Dollars that never get any respect might be a good buy here and there?

At the current low premiums, 90 percent is a no-brainer.

I just have a question, if it is too noobish let me know.

What do you all mean by at melt? As in at melting prices for silver?

And I didn't actually know people did this, can someone explain it to me? Laymans terms?
