Hi --

I was thinking of buying a some Greek Drachmas and some Euros (ref.) (and other interesting world currency I come across at coin shows, etc.).

I have never collected currency before. I was wondering how to safely store them (long term archival storage). I think PVC is not a good idea (I never use it for stamps or coins!) so I wonder if Polyester clear pages would be good, like they sell at Lighthouse.

Any advice for a new collector on long-term storage would be appreciated.

Thank you!

I don't collect currency or stamps really, I have only a small amount of each.

However, I would think Mylar sleeves would be the way to go. I note that valuable stamps are stored this way. Mylar sheet is tough clear and inert. It's also used as the base for Australia's 'plastic' notes.

I do not think that I have seen a really an outstanding way to display currency notes. The best I have seen is Mylar sleeves in a ring binder.

Hi mbird
I know you're a long way off but someday...
I've 2,500+ notes and storage was always a dilemma but I've eneded up with this.

They are in 8 A4 ring binders. Edges reduced by about 1 1/4" all round and then strengthened with 2" vinyl cloth tape.
Individual countries are held in 4 1/2" x 7" food-grade plastic bags with a piece of card to prevent buckling.
I have them all scanned for quick easy viewing.
Mylar sounds good but also expensive. But if you're going to concentrate on uncirculated notes then that could be the way to go.
Best of luck with the new venture.

thai-vic: That is about the best ring binder approach that I have seen so far.

Perhaps Mylar would be best within your system for your more valuable notes.
Polyethylene I guess would be better (because it is cheaper), for less valuable notes, and maybe OK as well for the more valuable ones as well. I have no information of the long term storage viability of polyethylene, but to my logic, it should be OK.

As you live in Thailand, I appreciate that you MUST protect your notes from excessive humidity, and so all notes need to be protected from it.

Perhaps the whole of your collection could be stored in a large air tight cabinet with silica gel to keep the air dry within the cabinet.

Another problem with high humidity is acidic sweat from our hands. Handling notes that remain in transparent protective sleeves is the coin equivalent of 2x2 coin holders or airtight capsules.
