Well I have started going down my list of Morgans and the first one I needed was a 1878CC. I bought this one, the best he had. I was hoping I could get some opinions on the grade. I don't know what the brown stuff is, the first time I noticed it was on these pics. I think it would grade Fine, but I value your thoughts on it. Thanks for looking....

The reverse looks to have more wear than the obverse. I'd grade the reverse F12 and the obverse close to VF20; F15 overall.

I'd soak it an acetone to remove the contamination.

I agree with 15. Nice honest wear and color to this coin. I like it

How long should I let it soak?

Make certain you have a suitable container (that usually means real "glass", NOT plastic). Let it soak for an hour or two then rinse it under cool, running water, and pat dry.

You can do this once or twice and see if it helps remove the contamination for very little cost and no risk to the coin. Good luck!
