I have been going through half dollar boxes and coming across many coins that are marked with permanent marker. Sometimes it is a big dot, sometime dots with dates on the back, sometimes lines, etc. At first I thought hey now I don't have to waste time looking at them, but then I started finding NIFC coins with big marks on them. So I guess they are not looking for everything, just the silver probably. I guess I can clean this off but I don't want to. PLEASE STOP MARKING THE COINS. Thank you. Monkeyman67

I agree.
I cringe whenever I get such a defaced coin in change.

It is not really permanent, a swish in acetone will take it right off.

I still find marked coins here in Thailand. A new 2 baht was produced from 2005 to 2007 in copper-nickel but was close in size to the 1 Baht coin. I guess shop owners were marking them to avoid giving out too much in change. From 2008 to the present they were changed to aluminium-bronze(?) so problem solved and no more markings. As biokemist pointed out a swish of acetone does remove it and as they are circulated coins it won't do them any extra damage.

At least a marker is better than a chisel!

This was seldom done and usually for some odd reason. Then as it got mentioned more and more on the internet, it is now becoming something to do. Not long ago I saw on the news they mentioned how people are marking coins with a marker and that too will now increase the amount of people doing it. Old saying is Monkey see, Monkey do.

If I swish it in acetone do I then have a "cleaned" coin?

Acetone is perfectly safe for coins. Just remember that it is a flammable solvent but it can be used safely if you follow simple precautions- use in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources.

I suggest doing a search on the Search tab at the top for Acetone, coin cleaning, cleaning coins, etc. You could end up with your fingerprints on a coin instead of the marker. And if the mark is from a paint, the Acetone may not work either.
