Guys, this old thing has been down the road a far piece, used and abused, maybe even spent a little time in hibernation notalot of detail left, but enough to identify it is as a 1787 Fugio Copper/Franklin Cent.
According to the RedBook, these were the first coins issued by authority of the United States, and that fascinates me.
Not much on pretty, but I'm pleased to have it just the same.

Very nice, your low grade example still beats my nonexistent example That is probably one of the most recognized pre-Federal issues and I hope to own one someday as well.

Yes, a favorite among type collectors.....While fairly worn, it is still easy to see that this is obverse 12, which is unique, however, it was paired with seven different reverse dies.... circle link relationships give it away as reverse M... It is Newman variety 12M (R-3).... not one of the rarer varieties, but still.....NICE FIND...

Thanks guys. This type has facinated me for quite awhile, and, of course, my imagination can run wild with it.....makes me wonder who's hands this coin might have passed through.
Zeewool - I bow to your knowledge of early copper coins - I just thought it was pretty cool to finally have a Fugio - couldn't ever afford one in a higher grade (still can't) but, good or bad, I've got one now - good feeling.
I've no doubt there some folks in the hobby that would look at it as a junk coin, but I see it as a piece of U.S. History - when these coins were issued, the United States was brand new, and I think having a coin nearly as old as the U.S. is pretty spiffy.

Our feelings lie in the same vein Ralph...Those are the same sorts of things that I think about.....with an uncirculated coin, there is no doubt about its lack luster history, but with a well worn coin, who knows who's hand helped in putting that wear there.
