Yes right Scooby. I always say error when I mean variety. Sorry, I got to get out of that habbit.

OK Scooby, ya got me curious...what is the difference between a variety and an error? I've heard others saying the same thing but to an average person, error sounds like "mistake" and variety sounds like something done on purpose.Clue me in on this please.

A variety is something unintentional on the dies themselves that gets minted on EVERY SINGLE coin that those dies strike. For example, the doubling above is on those particular dies and will happen on every coin struck with that variety.
An error is any of the other events that happen during the minting process that is specific to that coin. For example, an off-center strike, or a planchet that gets struck through something like wire or cloth.
Others can probably expand on that a little more, but that's the basic premise.

Correct. But the die is doubled, not double. Therefore, it is called a doubled die.

Now that will probably never change in my vocabulary...after 45 years of saying double die

The machine doubled coins are not errors. They are damaged coins from movement of the dies during striking. True errors are usually a one time happening, not part of the regular run of die wear/deterioration.
