I don't mind paying the fare as long as the train rolls whether I choose to pay, or not. The train needs to roll regardless of the passengers.

Quote: I have been treated well by some doctors, which I return to seek their opinions, also I have been seen by some "larger than life"( in their minds ) doctors with the poorest bedside manners and would never consider returning I had a back surgeon that had the worst bed side manner I had ever seen. I had another that was the nicest Doctor I believe I had ever seen also. I hated going to the one but loved going to the other but had to get a second opinion before I let someone stick metal rods in my back that could effect me for the rest of my life. Anyway when it came time for the surgery I went from personal experience rather than what the professionals said, I wish I hadn't. My back is so messed up now that at times I can not even walk. This one with horrible bed side manner was the top of his field and had the best of everything in latest equipment. I guess he knew what he knew and told you with the authority he had because of there was no question to him what the problem was nor how to fix it. This one doctor that had great bed side manner, once I kept having problems didn't want to see me anymore because he couldn't fix me (I have heard it described as a GODlike simplex, where if they can't fix you they don't want you in their face to remind them of it). Anyway what I am trying to say some people speak with authority and may hurt your feelings with the way they speak but don't take their confidence as an insult because if your life is in their hands they are the ones that will know what to do if something goes wrong and have the confidence to do what is needed to be done when things happen that wasn't expected

Without transparency the destination will be to the middle of no where, certainly not where you thought you were going.

I'm loving this. Quote: Without transparency the destination will be to the middle of no where, certainly not where you thought you were going. The advantage of a train is, once it's rolling it's pretty hard to stop. It will eventually arrive somewhere whether anyone stands on the tracks or not. Twenty years ago it would have been one thing, but today chances are half the passengers will have smartphones with GPS. There's no way they won't know where it's at, where it's going, or fail to share that information with those who don't.

Quote: I am an error collector, I love a good coin, that exhibits an out of the ordinary "error" from the mint, I do not see an errors society of America, trying to take over as the go to people or the obvious choice to pass the torch to if " Mr Error" should step away from his long, researched area of Numismatics That is correct, no one worries about if the person who writes the books on certain varieties or errors happens to step away or whatever because they know what they know because of his works and the only thing that can be done is the next person just either add his works with their own that they have discovered or just add to it in their own book about the same error/variety. If you look you have certain numbers from all different people with just about every series, you have coneca (as a matter of fact this is a group of people that some deal in coins to make money and no one wants to boycott them), you have breen, and all other types of numbers that have been influenced by one person or another that still to this day are being used even though they are gone and have been for years, it didn't stop the discoveries that weren't know when they were around, the numbers just keep on adding up even to this day. They may use another numbering system and we may as well unless LVA decides whop to give the rains to if this does happen. That is why I wonder why everyone is worried about what is going to happen when LVA steps down when it really doesn't matter, we will still find more discoveries after that time, the only question is will we have another numbering system then or still use the same and just add to it (if he does pass on the rains to another). Either way it doesn't matter to me because I know the hobby will move forward as it has with every other series. People used to look to Breen to number their coins and he would assign them a number if he thought it warranted a new number, if it didn't he wouldn't add a number to the system. Now that he is gone we do not look to Breen, we look to others that have done their own research to give us the numbering system they have in place, when something happens to them we will look to the next guy. It goes on and on and I see this as no different and that is why I try not to worry about what is going to happen if this or that happens, because I know from history that it will keep moving forward with or without the originator of the first numbering system that was in place

I see people use thee term worry, or worried, I am NOT worried to any degree of losing or wasting time on the subject. I am very concerned, I would like to share why, This is ALL hypothetical and I am concerned about its possibilities, I envision a certain group of people taking the reigns on this topic and doing something like the following, The groups ego will have all to do to keep from imploding, all over them selves also I see a fee being imposed upon "members" to par-take in the New and improved way things will be, along with the fee will come some sort of governing body to ensure all who wish to be entitled will do so according to the policies of the same,This would then include attributing, grading, etc. I also would not like to see the topic being discussed taken over and changed for the profit minded people who IMO, already have one foot in the door of this amazing wonderful hobby. I do know certain people have and kindly will share their knowledge with those who ask, I also know there are those who's ego's are as inflated and their sense of entitlement may bring certain ugly changes, all said, I really love the hobby and for now, will keep an open mind and maybe others will rise to the challenge and, well, who knows, anything is possible..........

As far as I do NOT have any particular insight into this conversation, I will offer my opinion.
There is a "collector" or "hobbiest" voice or two on the SSDC Board and in the Directors slots. I have been assured that whatever happens in the future, that the hobbiest/collector will be represented at the upper levels of the SSDC.
Can I take that to the bank? No. Will the SSDC even be involved with these decisions? No way to tell.
Do I believe and trust the folks that tell me this? Yes.

It is my honest insight, as limited as it may be. There is no attempt on my part to derail the conversation, or try to impose my opinion on anyone else.

Dave, I am new here. I am trying to offer opinions, and not be over-bearing, assertive or cause problems. There is a nice "family" here. I do not want to stir-up the pot. I just want to offer my thoughts when I think they are pertinent.

You've already proven yourself to be a careful thinker and sensible poster, VAMsforMoney. I was just wanting to convey the fact that, within the bounds of the G-rated rules we enforce, a lot of what we do here in the VAM forum tends to be stream-of-consciousness. Conversations go where they may and sometimes our attempts to wrench a topic back on track are unsuccessful. Nobody will think less of you for a post which bears only a vague resemblance to the original intent of the thread.

There are some areas in the topography that are shrouded in dense fog. Apparently a few people feel compelled to freely move about even though you would think in dense fog even with an illuminated train there is little wiggle room. In an otherwise thought to be grey area, it appears most of the movement that we do not see takes place here on the train.
