When completing a type album, what are the preferred criteria to look for in coins? Low mint coins? What grade? I read a lot of times in auction listings that certain coins are good "type" coins. I want to complete a set without breaking the bank but want to make sure I'm not just wasting money on useless representatives at the same time. Thanks for any tips.

Great handle Yukon! Fortunately the answer is whatever you want to do. In the little more than a year I've been on this forum, I've heard of just about every variation on the type set. Most seem to shot for the best specimen of a type that they can afford. See Gary for as complete as it gets. (https://goccf.com/t/48471).

Bryan1315 has a beaut (http://home.roadrunner.com/~kbr1315...sco7070.html)

Johnny (http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=49752) and
KenKat have really nice sets (http://home.fuse.net/kenkat/7070.html). Even when complete I think they both are always upgrading.

tumbleweedtrumpet is doing the 7070 on the cheap using damaged or holed coins.

TheCaveTroll and Magman are doing a holed type set (http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...OPIC_ID=1948)

And then there is the key date type set. I've heard a few people mention it but I haven't seen any pictures.

So there is no right or wrong answer.

I think the parentheses in the links above are throwing things off.

When I built my type set, my main criteria was that I wanted to be able to see most of the detail of each coin. So, that lead me to shoot for VF or better for most coins. I bought common dates because I wanted the "nicest" grade coin for the money. I also made a couple of compromises because I was on a budget as most of us are. So, the early large cents are more in the VG range as they get really expensive in higher grades and one of my Seated dollars and my Trade dollar came from ANACS "details" slabs - i.e., the coins have been cleaned in the past.

I would set a budget and a time frame and then decide what is realistically acheivable. Don't rush it - there's nothing wrong with taking 5 or more years to complete - mine took close to 4 - and yes, I am still upgrading when something really nice comes along!

same for me.
As to type sets. Those are one of the most coin collective things with a really large variety of choices. Everyone that does them has different ideas, wants, price ranges, etc. Some make their own and have even a larger variety. For example I made one with what is called a 20th Century Type Set. I placed one of each type of ocin in it regardless of condition. When full I said to myself, SELF, should I try to improve on the grades? I said no and put it away and haven't touched in in about 20 years.

There was a time when I was going for a first year of issue approach, so for example, the No Motto Seated Liberty dollar would have to be an 1840. Now I'm going for a "nice example" set where I don't mind most coins being handled. Grades range from G-Proof. Where possible, I target lower mintage years where there's little to no price premium in my desired grade if you have patience, thus the 1803 Half Cent. The most important criteria though is select whatever approach that ensures you will enjoy the journey.

No problem.

For future reference, always place a before and after the link. This will prevent the forum from auto-detecting the link and improperly parsing its contents.

I agree with everyone so far. I think it is very personalized and you can do whatever you would like. I think some really good options have been given. I think in the end, do whatever will make you most happy. It doesn't have to get done in a specific period of time. I'm working on an IHC set and have so far enjoyed the search for certain coins. I don't target a specific grade but have a variety of grades. I basically buy coins that I like. Having a set completed is a great accomplishment, but I find the hunt is much more fun and enjoyable.

what ever album collection your are interested in,u should first collect any coin of any quality until it comes from your pocket change. If you ever wish to buy a coin from a dealer or ebay, it should of very high quality. Later when you move around, you could replace vf coins with xf coins or unc.

warm wishes.

My experience was/is similar to the previous poster. I first prefer to build an album using pocket change and low cost, low grade coins. Later on, you can build a second album with better coins. The first one helps develop good perspective on what to get and what not to get.

Thanks for all of the great responses. I have been taking the nice and affordable route so far but didn't want to get too far and find out it was the wrong path.
