I am rather new and wondering if y'all can offer some insight into what is going on with this Ike? The entire Obv & Rev appear to be etched. Not sure really how to describe it. Hope the pics are OK so someone can offer an opinion.

I have seen several years that look similar to that. I wondered if they were blasted myself. See a few once in an antique store in 2x2's that had "frosted' written on them .

Frosted would be a perfect description.

Wonder why?

Can't imagine it being sand blasted, but I am sure one of our many expert collectors has a good explanation.

weight is a hair under 22.7 grams

I wish I could get a good close up as it appears to be a uniform frosting across the entire surface. Actually rather nice up close, but dull appearance from a distance.

The larger picture helps in this thread I Think from the pictures
that is was stored in an awfully hazardous place for coins.
Or possibly some type of acid was put on it.
But with out seeing it in hand you may be seeing something
that I am not. I would not just get rid of it until
you have someone you trust with a good amount of knowledge
of coins take a look at it for you with a magnifying glass.
There are too many varieties in the Eisenhower Series
being discovered in the last few years to just disregard
it as environmental damage without someone looking at it for you
in hand versus pictures. I hope this helps

Thanks for your input gang. I am planning to take it my a local coin expert to see what they think & then more as needed.

Because it is so unusual I had no plan for discarding/spending.

I will post info (& better pics if I can) once I know more.

Merry Christmas everyone

I think it's been etched, probably in an acid bath.

Well your dollar certainly looks intriguing! Just hold on to it until you are completely satisfied whether it was made that way, or altered by man.

After taking the coin to a local shop, they think someone tried to clean the coin & left it in jewelry cleaner too long.
