i have an 1804 Half Cent, spiked chin variety..i am curious what caused this spike..almost looks like a goatee sticking atraight out...

The dies came together with a small bolt between the dies. The spike on the chin was caused by the head of the bolt damaging the obv die and you can see on the coin posted by DVCollector the damage done to the obv die by the threads of the bolt.
