I am looking for a strong way to display, organize, and protect my coins instead of just having them sit here on my desk. I am slowly running out of room and am looking for some good ideas on how to store and categorize them etc. I really do appreciate all this help.

If you have a local coin shop near you, I would pick up a 2X2 box and some flips, I personally like the cardboard staple type holders with flat staples. If you want to go more of the display route, a Dansco Album is very nice but are made for a specific series only unless you go with a 7070. The box and flip method keep mine the most organized and let me suggest this, catalogue your coins early on in your collecting ventures! I wish I would done this 25 years ago instead of just acquiring. You will be glad you did.

Do you use some sort of software to catalog them or just write them down?

I went the software route and found it's just easier for me, to list them on Microsoft word. I never understood how to use a spreadsheet believe it or not :-O I also have a physical ledger that I write down all new acquisitions.
On another note, I use and trust the Intercept Shield line of coin holders and the Airtites. I have some very expensive coins in them and they do the job of long term protection very nicely.

Do you actually sell coins or know of a dealer that I could work with you buy coins for a good price. I am looking to start an older coin set. I make about 300$ a month so I could invest at least 50$+ a month into it.

I use a three-ring binder with plastic coin holders (25 in a slide) with 2x2 cardboard holders (these are about 5 cents each). I use this cause I also collect world coins. So I have about 5 binders (each labeled with a different continent). This is a hobby not an investment. If you make smart decisions and find good buys then this may be an investment but you are not going to get a lot out of it.

Quote: Do you actually sell coins I do. Check my ecrater site. CCF members get a 5% discount on all raw coins. I am always adding new coins, and have a long way to go, as I have many more coins to add. As far as knowing reputable dealers, I do, but they are here on the West Coast. Not sure where you are, but check your local area for shops. I have had tremendous service and great buys from McIntosh Collectibles out of Sacramento,Ca. They are extremely fair, and reputable. That's just one example of I am sure the many reputable dealers out there. I make sure that they are members of ANA and/or PNG.

Vermontensium was the first person I had ever made an internet purchase from and he remains to provide the best online transactions I have period. Great prices and fair/fast shipping. I would suggest you check out his site as there are lots of great older coins you can pick up even at $50 a month.

I'm going to second the Album method. If you're going to stick to one coin type, go get yourself an album. Vermont is right about the Intercept Shield. At least my coin dealer tells me they're the best, but Dansco is right behind them. I own Dansco's because they're about half the price and I like the brown color for some reason :)

I use Dansco albums as well, but 2x2s in a three-ring binder are great for starting out. You can even get a Dansco album that holds 2x2s (twelve per page, instead of 20). If you just treat the spreadsheet as a ledger, you will do fine.
