I don't collect paper money as much as coins, but whenever I find something neat in circulation I tend to keep it. I track bills with Where's George and have been stamping them for the past month or so. However, I realize that it's not that fun to find marked up coins, so I was wondering if the same opinion is the norm for bills. I haven't really thought much of stamping, but have enjoyed seeing where my bills go, and obviously keeping (and not stamping!) any bills that I find interesting. This means that I will obviously refrain from stamping bills older than 1995, star notes, radars, etc. Do currency collectors still find this a nuisance? I would like to hear your opinions!

I don't think that stamping of newer notes is much of a problem.... I don't collect current notes though (I consider anything from the 1960s and later as newer notes)..... I say stamp away.... folks tend to save star notes and low or interesting serial numbers.... so those will be what is available to collectors 50 years from now..... lots of star notes and neat serials.

I myself probably wouldn't do it just because I am not very knowledgeable in the note collecting side of things. I would hate to find out I marked up a note that had some sort of rare plate or signature on it and made the note worthless to the next guy. That is just me though. I have seen coins that people put a BIG scratch over the Obverse because they had to break into their collection to make ends meet and figured if they couldn't keep it in their collection they were going to make sure it wasn't collectible to anyone else. I just feel that is a poor way of looking at it

I, too, am a Georger, as they are called. However, I only mark bills that are Series 2003 or newer.. I give the older notes a little respect.. However, I really hate when I see older notes (aka Barr notes and small-portrait 10s and 20s) go up for auction on their forums. Many people buy these notes just so they can write the stupid website url on them and spend them. I try to save as many of these notes as I can...

I dont know.. I just kinda makes me feel bad knowing some of these notes have survived for 40 years or more, sometimes in pristine condition, only to be destroyed by a fad website.. If it keeps happening, eventually, they might run out. Who knows?

I don't mark notes "Where's George" but I do enter every one I find just to see where it has been. I usually find 4 or 5 a week so it seemed only natural to start entering them. One thing that irritates me greatly is seeing collectible notes marked up.

I wrote a note to the wheres george kindly suggesting that they remove the option of entering the older bills into the site. If that is done, fewer people will be encouraged to mark up these old bills. You may do the same if you wish. I find that the idea of tracking bills is fun, and I also get quite a few stats about the bills I enter. Although I haven't got around to entering too many, I notice that at this point there is a steady trend that higher (lower?) block letter like A,B,C... are much easier to find than the lower ones (okay, so it may be obvious, but it's nice to have some data anyways!).

So what about the guy that collects notes 50 years from now ? You may as well mark up all of them because eventually somebody will be irked anyway

Lol.. Good point, but I think the bep sells many more unc notes in sheets, and there are many more collectors that can afford to save unc notes they get from the bank than there were 30 years ago..

I have fun with Where's George. One of my notes has made it to Croatia. I tend to stamp mostly $2 bills that I give out as tips. It's fun to watch as they pop up all over the country even world.

I always enter the ones I find, but I rarely find them. I think the last one I got was over a year ago.
