I would grade your quarter as EF, placing it in the $150-200 range. The mintmark position may seem a bit odd but far right is normal. That is not dirt on the coin, it is called patination or toning. A worn coin that old should not be bright and shiny, that is quite unnatural, so do not clean it.

Its not really dirty, probably just toned, and you want to leave it that way. Don't clean it, whatever you do. She's in really nice shape and I'd say possibly Mint State-60 since I don't really see any wear. Beautiful Barber!

Maybe AU, but I don't see any wear. Bio, how'd you come to EF?

Are you a PCGS or NGC member? Those are the two graders I'd recommend, however you have to be a member and if you are only grading one coin it may not be worth the membership fees for you to have it graded by one of them. If you do not want to pay membership dues for one coin to be graded I'd go with ANACS.

Really the only problem I see with this coin is a small rim ding between and below the 9 and the 3.

I would like to see enlarged photos of the coin, but it looks to be at least an AU50 (probably higher) coin from what I can see putting it in the $250+ range. For comparison, this Barber quarter of mine was graded XF45 by PCGS and yours looks to be in better shape.

ok so heres the deal with this coin. according to a coin shop I went to today, the guy who ran the place said this coin is a "piece of chinese" garbage. and said its worth $3...But looking at various photos around the internet, it looks very authentic to me. Maybe he was trying to pry it from me for cheap? cause he did say he was a dealer also...what do you guys think?

Did he point anything out about the coin which led him to believe that it was fake? Have you weighed the coin on digital scale? The coin should weigh roughly 6.25 grams.

the coin may not be a fake itself but the mint mark looks off to me, I'm 98% sure that its not in the right area. here is what an 1893 s MM position should look like

Nolawyer-
well he said he could tell by looking at the metal itself....but I tried to get a little more than that from him as to how he could tell it was fake and all he kept saying was "40 years in the business, I been around the block".....im gonna try and weight it...thank you.
