Picked up a handful of P mint today at B&M and got stumped on the first one. It has the long nock and connected leaves. I believe it should fall in the VAM 70-84 range but I haven't been able to nail it. Partial nostril, doubling of left stars, LIBERTY doubled lightly, and right stars look normal to me. There may be a slight line under the first 8 but not as pronounced as the website pic, and looks like a die chip on the first 8.

Okay, let's learn together how to attribute a 1878-P. Count the tail feathers on the reverse. Are there eight or seven? Not eight. That eliminates VAM 1-VAM 23 as they are all eight tail feather. Seven? Okay, now are they remnants under the tail feathers? Does it have a lock nock and parallel tail feather? Answer these questions first. Then we will go to round two.

OH MAN! What an idiot. I got so focused on 7TF long nocks I forgot about the few 7/0 types. I see the extra talon now and the small die cracks. VAM30

As long as I'm learning something about 78's, I have another focussing problem soon to post. nlp

we will be here. As soon as I saw that long nock and then saw that talon sticking down there I knew from that and didn't have to look any further

Once you have eliminated eight tail feathers reverse, then you must eliminate the 7/8 tail feather reverse. 7/8 tail feather reverses are 7/0, 7/3, 7/4/, 7/5, or 7/7. The 7/0 tail feather is easily overlooked as it sometimes is confused with a B1 reverse. So check for VAM 30, VAM 31 and VAM 45 before proceeding to other VAM numbers. (Note: VAM 30, VAM 31 and VAM 45 are 7/0 tail feather.

Good methodology leads to good results.
