IMO even if this coin had original surfaces in this condition it would not justify the cost of slabbing.

I hope we don't get to the point where every unslabbed coin is suspect...
I agree with both statements.

I have never bought a slabbed coin. My goal is to learn the pricey key-dates well enough to buy them either raw or slabbed with equal confidence.

I don't like buying slabbed coins. I like being able to put them in 2x2's and place them in my album for easy viewing.

Yea, personally it looks like a nice coin. I enjoy a nice clean coin but I know that most like the distressed look. I contacted the ebay seller about it possibly being a fake and he assured me that it wasnt. He said that he personally did not clean the coin and its been that way ever since he has had it. If I was not satisfied with the quarter, he said he would refund me in full.

The quarter has definitely been cleaned, especially because how shiny it appears to be without any sign of luster which unfortunately takes away most of its potential value. Personally my advice is to do a little bit more research on how to spot cleaned coins and how to authenticate to a certain extent although in most cases common, non key date coins can automatically assumed to be genuine. I agree with the others who mentioned that feedback doesn't always guarantee a good coin or seller.

Ya this seller continues to harass me and send things like this:

"Go ahead and contact ebay. Ever since the auction ending , I have been working with ebay who is doing an investigation of you both as a buyer and a seller.
You never had an intention of paying for this item anyway and ebay Trust and Safety knows it! Your the fake, dude!
I offered a refund, minus my shipping costs!
You had no intention of keeping the coin from the start and want to harass!
Get to the point, the coin is genuine! How about you?"

He is pulling stuff out of his butt. He was extremely worried about getting his money on this transaction. I believe I will just have to handle this with ebay and paypal.

What in the heck happened...I thought you liked the coin ? I don't think it was a good idea to to ask about it being fake unless you had a good reason. And why was he worried about getting his money ?

Nice coins that I am sure are all right as far as being genuine. I tend to be a much more optimistic collector when it comes to fake vs. real. It is a shame that many collectors are paranoid due to the flood of reproduced and fake coins in the market. I'm not putting anyone down, but I feel that one can become jaded with the hobby and that is downright tragic. Collecting coins is supposed to be relaxing, rewarding and fun and if one can't take advantage of those attributes then it is time to walk away. On a lighter note, I am very much into the Seated Liberty coins like you are and many reasonable deals are out there if you look hard enough. Once again, you got some nice coins there.

Looks to me like a decent looking coin. I expect that it is real. As others have said, it was probably dipped or cleaned at some time in the past along with millions of other coins. It's still old, silver and if you like it, that's 90% of what matters in my opinion. Cleaned coins need a home too and if I like them, they are welcome in my collection.

I think you probably need to continue to get some experience with evaluating coins and honestly, spending $41 on ebay is not a bad way to do so. Get it in hand, and really look at it. I think that you probably won it, posted about it here, got some initial questions and maybe second guessed yourself. It happens to all of us. Believe me, I've been there.

Some people really dislike ebay and it's not without its risks, but I have gotten some really great deals and great coins as well. It takes some time to gain the experience needed though, so take your time and keep your purchases small to start.

Ken
