Howdy! I'm on my second VAM and I have identified it as this:

http://www.vamworld.com/1897-O+VAM-3

However, there is a very obvious die crack visible to the naked eye. It runs clockwise all the way from the left star to the second A in America. (With the naked eye it stops at C) The crack is continuous for about 3/4 of the coin, following the top of the letters very symmetrically.

Before I take pictures, I just wanted to describe the crack and ask if it is common.

As Gene, has posted in a few other treads cracks in general are not listed. When they are field dis-placement has to be seen, or they have to have metal coming up into the field. But there are a few that do not so post photos as I think everyone here enjoys looking at them and we will see what your seeing!

I knew that was coming! Cool, from what I understand, die cracks are very common and generally alone do not qualify for VAM. I figured the cracking on this coin was typical on late stage dies. Just wanted to confirm in case I start finding die cracks this extreme. You can see the crack jump from letter to letter, word to word and even through the wings. Start at the last picture, the crack is obvious on the top of the text.

The crack is continual, although you need a loupe and just the perfect lighting to pick up the lighter portions of the crack... especially at the end of America.

Heck, that's not extreme. Not for a Morgan.

*This* is extreme:

Wow! So I have a couple of questions.

How does a die crack on a VAM affect its value?

Can a die crack on what seems to be a VAM disqualify it from being attributed?

I'm guessing that my coin is just a late stage http://www.vamworld.com/1897-O+VAM-3

Die cracks are normally just supporting identification features for a given VAM, and have no effect on value unless they happen to represent a more-rare Late Die State. The particular coin I posted, 1921-D VAM-1H, is exactly characterized by its' die crack. On this one, the die crack is so large as to be worthy of designation on its' own. Note the size of the breaks on the second and third stars.

most of your coin has the die cracks,,Where as SD's show extreme die breaks where metal is comming out of the cracks up into the field, In this case on your coin between the I-T of united there appears a small break, interesting but with such a common VAM the VAM gods have not deemed it listed or significant enough to at least allow its presence known....meaning it doesn't make it a super VAM so it was not worth there time to add it to the listings or give it another assigned number.. still nice coin there
