I decided to take another calculated gamble on this lot(I just won it today), and am wondering what you all think? I will post my thoughts later on. I'm back in SLQ frenzy mode..lol (but no, I'm not expecting a 1916) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITEdited by johnny54321 12/30/2010 8:49 pm

Not bad at all...would like to see the 23-S when you get it...and maybe my imagination but one of the reverses looked cleaned....maybe just the lighting

SLQ frenzy mode.........I love it. Have the same problem myself. It looks to me like the 18-s might actually be a 18/17-s...guess we will find out when you get it. If it is then you should have done very well

Quote: It looks to me like the 18-s might actually be a 18/17-s...guess we will find out when you get it. That didn't even cross my mind. I don't think it is, but that would be a killer score..lol. Quote: Not bad at all...would like to see the 23-S when you get it...and maybe my imagination but one of the reverses looked cleaned....maybe just the lighting Yeah, it looks like a potential 23-s in the front row there. Honestly, before making these kind of purchases, I try to consider the worst possible scenario. In this case, the worst scenario would be that all of the coins not individual pictured would be worth no more than melt(basically junk). The melt value of 15 not pictured is about $80, and I think that the value of all of the F-XF coins pictured would almost make up the rest of the $270 I paid. So I'd just about break even if that were the case. Looking at the picture though, the rest of the coins appear to almost all be pre-1925 partial dates. The seller seems to be seriously underestimating the value of pre-25 SLQ partial date keys. If the partial date 23-s is genuine and identifiable, that would almost be worth the entire lot...not to mention the 1921, 1919-d/s and the semi-keys. So it looks like a lot more upside than downside potential, and I also see a few upgrades for my set. I may be wrong, but that's the gamble. To the seller's credit, he certainly isn't "over-advertising" like so many ebay sellers do! So, I wont fault him if the rest turn out to be junk...but I'm hoping there are a few jewels in there.

johnny54321, you are taking a calculated risk in much the same way I do when buying on ebay and it usually pays off for me.I think you'll do good on this one,let us know how it turns out.

I think this lot will definitely pay off even if the 23-S isn't actually there, since there are a lot of tougher semi-keys that I can see from the images. The seller seems fairly honest from his description, good luck! The excitement from waiting for the lot to arrive and searching through it should be worth a couple of dollars by itself. Be sure to keep us posted!

Thanks wheatguy. It will be here on monday, so I will have a full report monday night. It's funny though after examining the photos that he didn't post pictures of all 3 type 1s. There are obviously 3 there, but the strongest of the 3, he only showed the reverse. It looks possibly harshly cleaned; but we'll see.

I received the lot today....and all I have to say is: Wow, this seller TOTALLY underadvertised it. Basically this is a complete date/mm slq set from 1917-1925(no 16 or 18/7-s) but everything else. The 1921 has a 4 digit date. The 1919-d has a 4 digit date. The 1923-s only has traces of the last 3, but it has F-12 details! Any one of those 3 coins would be worth the $270 alone, and then there are all the semi-keys! There are about 10 coins that I will actually use to upgrade my main collection(overall, this is a better collection than the one I have in my Dansco). I kind of feel bad though. It is one thing to cherrypick a dateless 16(I dont feel bad about that), but this guy was selling a collection, and posted close-ups of all the WRONG coins to sell it! This collection should have gone for over $1500. Maybe I should offer him some more money? I dunno, but I will post pictures of everything tonight!

Sounds like you scored big! Quote: I kind of feel bad though...This collection should have gone for over $1500. Maybe I should offer him some more money? You don't owe the seller anything. You took the gamble and now it has paid off. That gamble could have just as easily gone the other way too. You won the auction fair and square. It's business. You have nothing to feel even remotely guilty about. It's obvious the seller didn't know what they were doing...you did. Enjoy the fruits of your knowledge and labor!

WOW! Those are some tough keys! I agree with cwb, knowledge equals power and if the seller neglected to do research on his part I'm sure he's happy with the $270 you paid.

Quote: if the seller neglected to do research on his part I'm sure he's happy with the $270 you paid. True. Actually the ONLY negative I have about this purchase is that the seller actually took ALL of the coins out of the album, and put them all together in a plastic bag to ship! So $1,500 worth of coins jingling around each other in a bag. I think they are ok though. There are several obviously cleaned coins, but most look problem free. I'm photographing the obverse of each coin now to display. Thank you all for your comments!

Ok, here we go. I only shot obverse photos for sake of time; but will take some reverse shots at request. There are 3 or 4 that look cleaned and several with damage. Some of the dates are tough to read in the photos, but they are usually better in hand. The 22 pictured were identifiable, and I got one more that I couldnt identify: 1917 t1 1917 t2 17d t1 17d t2 17s ty1 17s_ty2 18 18d 18s 19 19d 19s 20 20d 20s 21 23 23s 24 24d 24s 25
