hi all
I just recently starting searching rolls of pennies for errors in my spare time. Some things I am curious about though. Is it worth searcing other denominations such as nickels, etc. or do most only search pennies? also, when searhing these are you guys using a magnifying glass or just what can be noticed by eye. It seems some of these errors would be hard to find with the naked eye, but after searchin only about 30 dollars in pennies over the last 3 weeks through a magnifying glass I now need glasses. any advice to help me get started would be great, I have yet to find anything.

Pennies are fun. Get you a 10x loupe to get you started. With pennies, familiarize yourself with all the different varieties. Once I made a list, I sat those years aside for further inspection after I was finished.
I would keep wheat pennies and set aside any foreign (mostly Canadian). You may find some that are worth keeping that are in exceptional condition, and watch for proofs. I also kept all my pre-1982 pennies since they are closing in on 3 cents per in copper value, and getting thinner by the day in circulation.

Nickels have been decent as well. I averaged 1 silver War Nickel every 1.5 boxes, with 1 Buffalo every two.
It's the easiest denomination to fill an album just from circulation.

I quit wasting my time with quarters, they are way over saturated with State Quarters.
Dimes, I found an average of 1 silver per $250.00 box. I cannot rarely get halves here, and neither one
of my banks will order them for me.

Just depends on whether you are looking for errors or for die varieties. They are two completely different things.

If you are searching for errors, just look for what you can see without magnification. Have the magnifier handy to look for things that don't look right...but as for errors, only those that are obvious are really worth much of anything.

If you want to search for doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, and other die varieties, magnification and some education in the minting process would help a lot. Purchasing a few better examples would help drive the point home. There are a number of forms of doubling that are not collectible and are often mistaken by novices to be the valuable kind. It doesn't take much to learn the difference. Most doubling of the collectible sort takes some modest magnification to identify correctly.

Alas, errors and die varieties are two completely different animals and must be approached as being very different. Many people who collect one don't collect the other. I am a die variety specailist and don't really care much for errors.

thanks for the advice. not really sure what I am interested just yet, but I'm leaning towards the die varieties. I have an addiction to collecting just about anything, lol. So far searching through coins has been fairly relaxing so thinking this could be the hobby for me. Do you know any good books or site I could check out to get me started?

coppercoins.com is an incredible website for identifying die varieties on copper coins. Start there and let the madness begin!

That site has helped me more than any other when looking to identify varieties on copper coins!

I always recommend purchasing a good quality dissection (stereo) microscope over using a loupe. Good luck with your searches!

hey chugly, any suggestions on magnification for these microscopes. Been searching for one but not sure what magnification needed to get those close ups of lettering and such. Also, should I get one with the usb camera included? I have a 15mp cannon SLR, but not sure if these can be hooked up to a scope or if they can how expensive are the connection devices. I did see a stereo microscope on ebay with camera 20X-30x for $180. But many are talkin g about the QX45 kids scope and using 60X magnification?
