i have found a 1950S RPM. comparing it to the coins pictured on coppercoins site, it looks very much (to me) like the 1MM-017. I am going entirely by the look of the mint mark, as there are no matching die markers. however the coin photographed is a late die state. not knowing enough about the die states, or lack of matching markers, I dont know if an earlier die state, could account for the absence of the markers. anyway just asking for opinions. thanks.

Without a full shot without the mint mark and date in the same image, location of the mint mark is a must. Have you check 001 for this die number?

yes - I compared it ti the 001, and the mint mark is too far away from the date on my coin. the "s" looks very similar, but the postion dosent match. I'm still struggling with getting better quality images. (new years resolution - get better photo skills). here is an attempt at showing the MM, with the date. thanks.

Well, it's an RPM - I can say that much for certain.

I'd say it looks a lot closer to 1MM-016 to me, but its hard to tell from your photo's of the mint mark placement (your mm seems tilted backwards a bit, unlike #-016). Try to check for those markers, they look pretty distinctive.

As to your question about die markers and die state...

I have found the die markers definitely change with die state. Sometimes they disappear completely from one state to the next. Or new markers may suddenly appear especially if a die is clashed, polished, etc. Other times (especially with die breaks/cracks), they will become progressively more obvious as a die ages. That is until they change a reverse die on you and really mess you up:). I find it all great fun!
