Would the scratches on the reverse, and the dings on the "d" in United keep this from AU? Lots of underlying luster is still present on this one.

In my opinion, those minor marks like what you see on the D in UNITED are likely bag marks. Those were likely present even when the coin was fresh from the Mint. They would not affect the grade if the coin is in the circulated grades, meaning AU58 or below.

Bag marks come into consideration in the MS grades.

The scratch on the reverse is a little distracting. It may be severe enough to keep it out of a problem-free holder if sent to a TPG, but I'm not sure. If the scratch were brown to blend in with the patina of the rest of the coin, it wouldn't be so distracting. However, it looks like this scratch has a little red showing in it, which naturally draws the eye to it.

These are usually well-struck, the cheek and right wheat stalk show some flattening, but it is a nice coin. EF-45/AU-50 (with some luster maybe)

I'll say EF45 bit too much wear for AU

I'd describe that as an attractive, problem-free, middle-of-the-road AU.
