buy them or search through lots of pennies...short of stealing I really don't know any other ways. For beginners, coppercoins offers a nice deal on a batch of wheats

I've looking through rolls at the bank and don't find too much, maybe a handful in the hundreds of rolls I have searched.

Is buying lots (on ebay) a good way to find quality cents?

Buying on ebay can be good but only if you know what to look for...there are lots of scam...unsearched being the biggest. Depending on what you are looking for, I would say this forum is a good plce to acquire some wheats. What do you need ?

I have lots of 40's and 50's. Now, getting the 40's and 50's in BU condition would be cool. I would like to get more 09's-30's, and '43 steels. But, I love just searching through rolls of wheaties. I have bought from ebay in the past, but have yet to get a 1922 or 1909-S or something of that nature.

I search at least $50 in pennies every week and still no keys.I did luck into a 1909-S vdb on ebay, but it was just luck that the seller really didn't know coins. I know you can buy rolls of wheats on ebay but don't pay more than 3 or 4 cents each. 99.9% of the unsearched rolls on ebay are a lie.I could hook you up with a bunch of BU's from the 40's and 50's at a buck a piece plus shipping if you're interested. They aren't MS 65's or anything but nice reds. You may find them cheaper, that's just what I have in em.

One other thing - is it worth it to save shiny red 2000-2010 cents from rolls, even if they have a few nicks and black spots? I really can't tell the difference between circulated and uncirculated when it come to red cents. If I see a ding or nick or something like that I tend to think it is circulated. I found a bunch of red shiny 2010 and 2009's in rollls but didn't save them. Was that wise?

Best to search for very nice ones, no nicks, dings,or spots. There are a few of us that believe saving some very nice zincs will pay off in the long run as they deteriorate so quickly.

It is VERY hard to find 1990-2010 cents without black spots or dings, so I decided not to collect those unless they are in US Mint unciculated rolls.

I guess I got hooked on wheaties 4 years ago. Thanks for the info, Maineman750....

About 4 years ago a dealer that was selling for over 25 years at a local flea market was retiring.

I bought aprox 25 rolls of just wheats, three rolls were just 1943 and the rest were a good mix.
$1.00 per roll.

Also bought three Whitmam albums for $5.00 a piece.

Best Whitman had only 16 empty spots
highlights from that album 1909, 1912, 1912D, 13S, 13D, 15, 15D, 16S, 16D,18S, 21S, 23S, 24S, 25S, 25D, 26D. The only empty spots pre 1925 are the 26S, 31S, 31D and33 D.

Not bad for $5.00 Canadian eh!

I haven't tried flea markets yet. I'll keep that in thought.

If you are looking for the soft keys, semi keys, or key dates best thing is to buy them directly and not mess with "mixed bags" because you likely will not find them.

Keys - 1909S VDB, 1909S, 1914D, 1931S

Semi Keys - 1910S, 1911S, 1912S, 1914S, 1922D, 1924D, 1926S

Soft Keys - 1909 VDB, 1911D, 1912D, 1913D, 1913S, 1915S, 1916S, 1921S, 1926D, 1931D, 1932

Only tougher coins in the short set will be 1934D and 1942S. Expect to pay over $20 each for them in BU.

Only other coin of mention for value is the 1970S small date - over $20 in BU.

Of course this entire list changes when you start talking about varieties.

And where are we going?

I expect the 1924S and 1925D coins to move to soft keys within the next few years.

I expect that mid-1980s zinc cents to become $10 coins in decent BU within the next 10 years.

I expect the presidential reverse 2009 cents to become soft keys within 20 years.

I expect that within 20 years the 1982 small date zinc cent will become a roll-hunter's "find" in any grade because it will sell for over $5 per coin even in AU.

I expect the 2008P and 2008D to exceed $10 per roll by 2020. Too much focus on 2009 cents left 2008 in the dust and largely circulated.

Interesting posts coppercoins! I think you are right about all three categories of "keys". Not likely to come across them in a lot.

My experience on the 34-D and 42-S matches yours. One other coin I had trouble finding in nice BU condition was 52. Could have just been one of those "things" though.

Hope you are right on the 80's zincs - and would love to find a 70S Small Date in the $20 range - seems they have been $35-40 lately.

For the OP - one way to jump start a collection is to buy a partial set - you can likely get a fair number of "soft" and maybe even a couple of semi-keys all at once. The will likely be lower grade but you can always upgrade later.

My recommendation to anyone seriously wanting to build a collection is to pick a grade based on a budget and stick to it. Don't buy hole fillers to upgrade later, a waste of time and money. Also don't buy partial sets because you end up spending money you shouldn't on stuff you won't want.

Only exception to buying a partial set is to buy one that someone puts together for you based on your specific needs...but don't just stab in the dark buying partial sets.

coppercoins - "I expect that mid-1980s zinc cents to become $10 coins in decent BU within the next 10 years."

Can you explain why you think the mid 1980's cents will be going up in value?
