Quote: Which is completely absurd considering how many TSA "agents" have been charged and convicted of theft from passenger bags... Exactly, and those are only the ones who get caught. As if she would be perfectly fine having some security guard carry thousands of dollars worth of her possessions away from her line of sight. That's what really bothered me. When she began flipping through the pages of my album in a careless manner I was only slightly bothered. I figured rapidly turning the pages isn't likely to hurt my coins. I thought it was disrespectful, but I also realized they're trying to move people through quickly and some people don't understand coins can be extremely valuable. Had that been the only incident I would have quickly forgotten about it. But then she put my coins back in my pack and walked away without saying a word to me. For a minute I thought, "Is she trying to 'confiscate' them?" I think the right thing to do is explain she's going to run everything through the scanner again, and offer to let me stand where I can watch my bag. As for the angry snipe, "Nobody wants your coins!" That was just moronic on so many levels.

Ouch. I could not imagine carrying any part of my collection with me. If I did imagine it, your story would definitely cause me to stop it.

very sad your backpack was searched. But you cannot take chances, whatever the scanner shows, the security personnel have take steps to ensure the safety of passengers. How could they know that you were only carrying coins, so they had check it once for their own safety.
warm wishes.

Similar experience flying back from Bangkok one time after a coin buying spree there. I think the staff were just intrigued by a large metallic lump showing up on the scanner. They weren't in an album just loose wrapped in bubblewrap. I had to undo the package and show them the contents. The security person called over his companion to show him. Obviously I kept an eagle-eye on them but they did refrain from picking any of them up. They probably thought I was just a crazy foreigner for having so much loose change!

I work for a major airline and deal with these morons on a daily basis. They are some of the laziest, nonchalant people I have ever ran into. They think they are law enforcement but actually, are civilian Government employees wearing a tin badge so with that, comes ego, power, and a sense of authority. Sorry to hear of your experience paratrooper, I only fly to and from the Santa Clara Coin Show with a fanny pack of coins I picked up there. I have not had any bad experiences yet.

I wonder if the concern was checking that you weren't "trafficking" large amounts of money by carting around bullion coins.
Pretty ridiculous. Sorry you had to put up with that. I'm not sure how you could have handled it better.

first: thank you for serving.
second: a few people commented that they are unwilling to fly nowadays bc they're not willing to give up their freedoms. however, you most certainly are giving them up if you decide to stop flying because of the incredibly onerous and burdensome restrictions and embarassments the fedgov foists upon flyers. that said, I agree with you. i'll not fly again until this is under control...ie I'm never going to fly again hah.
third: "very sad your backpack was searched. But you cannot take chances, whatever the scanner shows, the security personnel have take steps to ensure the safety of passengers. How could they know that you were only carrying coins, so they had check it once for their own safety."
to whomever said this, I have only a brief reply: necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.
fourth: I tend to agree with some others here. I think her reply really revealed a tinge of resentment more than anything else.

So for those on here that are dealers, how do you get your inventory safely to and from shows? Security has got to be absolutely nerve-racking.

Many dealers drive to shows to avoid airport scrutiny by driving but that is rapidly becoming an unsafe method as well. In the past few years, several dealers have been robbed leaving shows(strongarm and stealth) and a there is also the suspicion of crooks placing a GPS tracker on dealer vehicles. The highest profile dealer to have been hit so far is probably Julian Leidman, a well-known and highly respected numismatist, who got taken for about $1 million. Many of the coins have since been recovered but the crooks are still at-large.

Yeah, there wage will go up, might get some health insurance, and they might get some training to help them handle a situation like this. Maybe with a higher wage and some good benefits they will leave there I don't care attitude at home.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I was down in NC for Christmas. When we went to fly out of RDU, I had a carry on luggage bag full of home made mini loafs of bread from my mom. Each one is wrapped in tin foil. I was expecting to have the bag opened. I figured they would think it was blocks of explosives or something. But they didn't seem to care to look. Yet a bottle of mouthwash got taken from my 7 year old nephews bag. He forgot to put it in the checked bag.

As a fellow paratrooper myself, {3/325 ABCT back in the day 11B1P & 43E} I would have had no problem going R. Lee Ermey on any TSA agent. At least you got through it. I probably would've hand carried those myself than trust them to the USPS/Fedex/or UPS. Sorry to hear about the problems. Did the dealers like them?
