I have noticed that ungraded and graded gold commemoratives are selling for about the same price. Seems like melt value is the determining factor in the sale. Is grading of added value to the collector? Whats your take?

It's not a good investment to have most modern gold commems graded since the bullion content is most of the value. There are a few premium issues like the 1995W Olympic Stadium half eagle in mint state (not the proof) and the 1997W mint state Jackie Robinson gold piece. Those are valuable across the board and I expect you pay a big premium for MS-70.

There is a definite value in having nice examples of the classic issues graded (like the Lewis & Clark $1 golds and the Sesqui quarter eagles). Many of these were cleaned and few are available in top grades. They show major price jumps as you approach MS-65.
