i never really researched these. the 'blue' is terminology for the 40% ikes?

As I recall, the brown Ikes are the boxed proof coins from the mint, the blue Ikes are the uncirculated coins from the mint. This is how they came separate from the mint sets.

Yes...

Brown Ikes are the 40% silver proofs, shipped from the mint in a solid plastic lens (just like the ones used for the proof sets) that are housed in a brown box.

Blue Ikes are 40% silver uncirculated, shipped from the mint in cellophane (like the mint set) and inserted into in a blue envelope.
