Hello, in 1972 my father gave me a 1959 Lincoln Memorial penny sealed in a plastic envelope. The penny looks very shinny and in pristine condition, There were no proofs made of that penny and the penny appears gold in appearance although I do not believe gold penny's were ever minted. It is from the Denver mint. Does anyone know what I might have here? I know nothing about coins and have no interest in moving the coin because of it's sentimental value to me. I am just curious....anyone out there who can help.

Do you mean it is sealed in plastic like this:

If not, it's always possible someone gold-plated the coin.

Can you post any photos?

You are right about no proof 1959-D cents. The 1959 (Philadelphia mint) had proofs. Your coin could have been gold plated, but not by the US Mint. According to numismedia.com, a red 1959-D uncirculated coin is worth $9.20 in MS64 grade.

Specksnyder has posted the only "plastic envelope" that could have come from the mint. Anything else and it's not an original mint packaging deal, which easily means the coin could be polished as well. A number of "collector sources" (mail offer deals) back in the 60s and 70s ripped off a many beginner collector with special deals of polished coins and overgraded junk and packaged them in fancy envelopes to make them look official.

Chances are he put it away because it's the first year of the Memorial cent.
