I bought this early copper for cheap thinking if it's a lettered edge, it has to be 1793, 1794, or 1795. Both surfaces are very smooth, but the liberty cap and the wreath ARE barely discernable. I believe the weight on the 1793 was ~12 to 13.5 grams and at some point in 1795, the weight was reduced to 10.5 grams. The weight on this particular coin is 11.9996 grams. Now I come to understand that the edge lettering is different on different coins. I can't compare the letters to know if they're large/small or close/not close together and can't find any pics. I can say for sure that the single leaf after "DOLLAR" has the tip and stem pointed up. The more I read, the more confused I become. Any help would be appreciated......thanks.......clorox
Please post a picture of both the obverse and reverse of this coin and any edge lettering you can get (harder to do). This will really help everyone give an informed opinion of what you have. Thanks!
When the weight was reduced on the 1795 the lettered edge was eliminated as well. The weight was reduced in mid December 1795 but the Presidential order authorizing it, retroactively, was not signed until Jan 1796.
