Hi,

This strange old coin has been in a bag of older coins from various countries and dates. It is roughly 18.5mm dia. (max) and 3.8mm thick (max), weighs in at 6 grams and as best as I can measure the specific gravity, it is about 11.5...not Au..some for sure but heavy. The color that came through on the pics is not accurate due to the extreme jpg compression I had to use...it is bronze or gold colored.

Old? Worthy?

Thanks,

Seg

Hello - welcome to the forum.

Well, it is old - its a Roman coin from Alexandria, probably dating to around 200AD.

I'm not great at Identifying these but will have a go and get back to you in a little while (unless someone quicker beats me!).

As to if its worthy - we need the above 100% ID to decide.

OK - I think (sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong ) you have the following:

Leg: AK M AVP ΠPOBOC CEB
Rev: L B

Its an Alexandria issued coin of the Emperor Probus (276-282).

A lot of the Egyptian issued coins have an eagle like yours on the reverse.

'L' stands for year and 'B' for 2 meaning it was minted in the second year of reign of Probus dating it to 278AD.

Similar examples here:

Its not massively valuable - perhaps $20USD. The prices on the above link are dealer prices so a little higher than normal.

The coin in your pictures seems to be pitted (small holes in the surface) this could point to it being cast rather than struck and possibly a fake. It may just be the fact that your pics were reduced making it look that way. Other than the pitting the coin looks fine and genuine to me.

Cool. For some reason my head usually explodes when the Greek alphabet comes into play!

Thanks to Bobby and Echizento for the ID and info. Yes there are small holes or pits on the surface . Value or not, it is fun to have something that was made so long ago.
