I know, they're ugly, but 1921 Morgans don't tone the same as other years. There's a reason for this thread, and a story behind these two coins. I'll tell the story in a bit, after the membership has had a chance to inspect and comment on the toning of these two different coins.

I'm sorry SuperDave, but I'd have to put a BIG chain on that thing and keep it outdoors. Guess I have not been into coins long enough to appreciate toning.

All thought they look great exspecially the first , and proably one of the most impresive case of toning. I would have to asume that the toning was artifical or self enduced. Naturally they are created by a type of chemical reaction. I do believe there wer chemical's used on the first and the reverse of the second looks like Carbon, like maybe it was in a fire. But thats only a guess beautiful coins by the way

OK. One was blast white, and then sat, unmolested, on my computer desk for three months. The other was purchased, as seen here, in an NGC MS64 slab.

Something's not right about the second coin. The toning is really uneven and there appear to be scratches over the toning on the wing. Almost like it was toned, then circulated.

be sure you dont ever fall asleep at that desk your nose or something may fall off by morning because you have one of them funky desk's. I have a fake wood desk and I have coins that have been sitting on it about a year and they look just like they did when I sat them there

Sitting on your desk for 3 months shouldn't do that - should it? You're breathing whatever did that to your Morgan? The other one is an MS64? I think whatever you're breathing...NGC is on the same stuff. I like a little toning that gives a coin character but, both of these have more than I can handle. Sorry, but they are just plain UGLY to me! I wonder what the Coin Conservation could do to these to make them pretty again? I'm sure that you don't want to do that and wouldn't. I was just wondering! Thanks for sharing though SuperDave.

I think the top photo shows what happens when SuperDave sneezed on the coin sitting on his desk. MM

I'm intrigued by this thread. I'm waiting to hear the explanation as to why 1921's tone differently than other years. A different type of mint bag? The copper in the coins from a different source, not as clean maybe? I love the sneezing explanation! That could well be the explanation for the first coin. I actually like the 2nd coin. Maybe those threadlike toning strands are from mint bag fibers? The first coin may have sat unmolested, but I think there's probably more to it than that! Like maybe resting on an iodine soaked paper towel? Now, it will probably turn out that the first coin is the one in the slab.

Might that "blast white" coin have been treated with something to make it so? I have heard/read of doctored coins toning very quickly, even in slabs.

Why don't 1921 Morgan's tone the same way as others?
