It looks like an EF-40 to EF-45 to me. Nice piece though dark.

XF-45 and looks to be some wiping in some areas of the obverse.

Agree with XF-45. Those are tough to find in that grade - nice coin.

What would be a fair price for this coin?

Very nice sharp details on this coin, I'm going to say it would grade at least AU-50 and might just make AU-53.

What is EF 45 AU? How can it be both ef and au. Also what would the details be?

I think "EF45 AU detail" means the amount of wear is consistent with an AU grade but the coin has some defect that brings the market grade down to EF45.
I would say EF45 detail with obvious light wear over Liberty's cap, the stars, and rims. The dark color and faint porosity suggest an old chemical cleaning or possibly environmental damage. The first S in States has apparently suffered some damage. This is a scarce coin, with some problems. I'd value it at $200 or so.

I'm doing a type set and I'm finding these bust halves to be the most difficult to find in nice problem free condition. I haven't bought this one yet. I usually enjoy the hobby but I'm driving myself crazy with this one. I hate to buy a slabbed one and crack it out but I may have to. I hate knowing my coins are "problem coins" especially if I'm paying more than a hundred dollars for the coin. This seller won't accept refunds either. The bids at 182.56 with 50 minutes remaining. I guess I'll pass on this one. Not sure what I'm going to do. Collectors must have snatched up a lot of the nice coins already.

I agree that these are really hard to find in the higher grades. A lot of them seem to have issues with a weak strike - maybe a result of the new collar striking technique and the reeded edge. I paid around $180 for the one in my 7070 which is an 1837 in roughly the same grade as the above. This was probably 2-3 years ago though. Problem is a relative term - a lot of coins have had various things done to them over the years, including (gasp) some that ended up in slabs. If a coin shows no obvious problems - and this one does not in my opinion - then it's fair game to me. I'm willing to tolerate old possible light cleanings sometimes if the eye appeal is good. I do realize others may not and that's cool too. I would be curious what that coin ended at. They often shoot up at the very end on ebay! Ken
