Is this 1916D real? If so, I am looking for what grade it is, and if not, what makes you think it is fake?

hard to tell by the pics, but I believe it is-it would be difficult to add a mint mark to a coin that worn, and not be able to tell. As far as grade, off the top of my head ,AG.

Exactly what I was thinking. However, the AG is rather high. Lots of beat up appearance but on a coin that rare and popular, not a big thing.

I agree. The worn, blobby MM, is consistent with the level of wear an is in the correct location.

Looks real to me, but there are a ton of good fakes out there. It's very close to G-4 as far as TPG grading is concerned, but I'd call it an AG-3. No way would it grade anything less.

MM looks good to me. AG-3 most definitely.

Hmmm. I guess if Die 1 got really squished it might be consistent...

Thanks guys, the seller is asking too much anyways, but I thought I would try and educate myself a bit on the 16D.

The filled d makes it really tough to tell because the best way to know is the shape of the inside of the mintmark

Is it in a 2x2? Sometimes con artists glue obverse and reverse halves of 2 different coins together to create a valuable coin. They hope the mark won't take it out of the 2x2 to check.

Nod, it looks good to me. AG-3 seems most likely to me. $650 coin! Nice!

It is a AG-3 for sure. Where did you get it. Trade for 1877 IHC? I didn't think so.

i was thinking the same things con artist can remove a coin from a TPG slab or 2x2 and slip in a filed down glued together coin. or take a mint mark from a coin and place it on another. In this case a well worn D mark from another mercury cut out and transfered onto this one. Glue will get eaten away with acetone , but a MM placed on with J/B weld or a industral metal to metal adheisive would not come off so eazy Happens alot with Buffalo nickles I read S marks being applied on scare dates
