I don't think this one is staged, but I am sure they have hours and hours of footage to choose from an auction to make an entertaining 30 minute show. OBVIOUSLY, the majority of units that sell are full of junk or the STORAGE BUSINESS OWNERS would not auction, but liquidate themselves. They get more on average by selling them sight unseen (you know what I mean). NOW, I do believe that some of these storage business owners are rummaging through these units before they sell and taking some good items. NO DOUBT in my mind that this is happening some places. Probably already happening across the country that people who have NO BUSINESS buying these units will be bidding them up and losing their rear ends. These folks that buy these as a business have the VERY defined way to move the every day items. 2 have consignment shops and Daryl says he sets up in the San Diego swap meet. That is how they make their money. Selling a crappy old set of dishes for $5 to a bunch of illegals just north of the border. (Sorry, I do live in San Diego). :)

The show can be interesting but I hated to see it come on air. I deal in antiques/collectibles & have been educating myself for the last 18 months on storage auctions. About the time I knew enough to start bidding on the units the show came out. Suddenly everyone & their brother is showing up for the auctions & prices have gone through the roof.

Kind of like American Pickers....those guys know where to go with the "junk" they buy.

And then it's seen at Walmart.

What? Illegals right here in the USA? How could they ever get here?

Living in the hart of RR country we have many of what is called box car auctions. Those are box cars put on sidelines due to a company going out of buisness or something like that. Many years ago I knew someone that went to them all the time. Those too are locked by the previous owners. He did bid on many and almost always lost out on empty or junk stuff in those. Once he was reallllly happy though since a box car he won was full of Dremel Tools. He had 24 hours to unload it all or be fined for storage. Had to have everyone he knew go there with cars and trucks. You would be amazed at how much stuff a RR Box Car holds.

friend's dad owns 500 units.

Most is junk people left behind.

I don't know if you have seen the show but they go to "good" neighborhoods and surrounding area sheds to buy them because the chances are better to find some high dollar stuff. They all get like 5 minutes to look inside the storage shed at the door, they can't touch anything just what they can see from the door and bid what they thing the whole thing may be worth. Once they win they put their lock on the door and come back and clean it out. I have seen allot more things on that show worth more than $4100.00 with them only paying a couple hundred for the shed.

There was a story in our local paper a few years back about a thrift shop in SW Michigan that runs on these auctions. They take the "junk" they find in the storage bins and sell it at a second hand store. The good stuff they sell on E-bay or other auction sites.

Best find I heard of was a Harley Davidson hidden under a tarp behind some furniture. They weren't allowed to step inside the unit and couldn't even see the tarp that was covering something. It was a total shock when they rolled that one out.

very entertaining show. I saw the silver quarters one and wondered if there were any good dates...i searched auctions near my area too after seeing the auction kings tv show. I heard from a pawn shop owner in florida that he went to vegas and saw the pawnstars place. he said the tv show is fake and that the store is just a tourist thing where people go buy t-shirts that say they were there.

Saw that show and loved it, but then thought about how many thousands he spent on other units with out big payoffs. Also went out to the Pawnstars shop, (Gold/Silver) in Vegas a couple of months ago. Enjoyed it a lot. Yes there is a line outside with armed men at the door. I didn't mind waiting, it went quick. Looked at all the coins and paper they had in there, and obviously it was about 150% higher than normal. Low grade Morgans in a box were $40.

I bought some silver 90% coins off a guy who said he got them from a storage unit. This was a couple of years ago and I think I bought the silver at 10x face or so. Anyway, I got to talking with him and asking how he got the coins, if he was a collector, etc. He told me he travels around the area and all the way down to Florida to bid on storage units. He got these coins from one of them. Here's the kicker though. He said the box was still heavier than expected after emptying the silver coins out. He also noticed that the inside depth didnt match the outer dimensions and discovered a hidden compartment. He claims to have found 20 of the Liberty $20 gold pieces. He seemed to be a straight shooter and I had no reason to not believe him. He told me that the other stuff he gets he sells on ebay, Craigslist, flea markets and rummage sales. He had been doing it for about 5 years and that was the only really valuable find that he had come across.

I put forward that a side motivation -- perhaps the main motivation -- for storage shed leasing places is to expect the people to forget their lease / not pay it, so that then they can clean up on the auctions.

yeah it seems way over hyped. most people aren't going to leave coin collections in storage units. you've got to be that 1 in a million to make those finds, but hey I guess that's what coin roll hunting is like too.

I haven't found any GOOD coins in storage auctions so far, but am very hopeful about it since I haven't spent much money, and have only been to a few of them. I use << Site Removed >> to find auctions in my area, its cheap and you can select multiple states if you travel.

That show and episode in particular got me to thinking about the 1922 Peace dollar I had stashed away.
Low and behold I found it, researched it, and decided that this was a hobby for me!
I actually went to work and searched every roll of coins in the registers. I was hoping for pre-64 quarters.
What I found was a 1944 D Nickel, a 1928 Wheat penny, and 7 Nickels dating between 1941 and 1958. All Philadelphia.
I bet that particular episode spawned a rash of treasure hunters like me.
