OK. I was in a little coin shop that I recently found. Well coin shop might be an exaggeration, more like a coin and jewelry shop. Anyway.

I was picking up some loose wheat cents by the pound and the offered me 10 rolls of wheats that had been sitting in the case for years. He didn't understand why nobody wanted them, but offered them to me for wholesale .03 each or 1.50 a roll.

I told him it was my opinion that they had not sold because they were rolled by him and all the same year in each roll and labeled (example 1955D). I told him they would have sold better if they were just mixed rolls. He disagreed.

So I ask you. Which do you think would sell quicker? A roll of mixed wheats or a roll of 19XX-D? Remember we are not talking about bank rolls here.

What about trading? You think one way favors another?

(BTW I took them anyway.....variety collector here)

I would think that solid date rolls would be up and down. The dates with a lot of well known varieties for a specific year should carry a premium, while philly minted rolls from the 40's and 50's should be cheaper. I do think a lot of people prefer to buy mixed date rolls just for the variety factor, even though in reality, 99.99% of them have all been searched anyway.

At $1.50 a roll you still got a good deal. I think if they were mixed they probably would have been sold quicker.

What years were they?

Did you see any high grades?

I think a lot of collectors want different years for their sets, so they would like mixed lots better. I think its funny that he disagreed to sellling them mixed, since they were sitting for years.

chugly: My logic was thinking that if they were mixed rolls those collectors trying to put together a circulated set would be more likely to want 50 mixed cents rather than one solid date. But ya if they are labeled by date I always assume they have been searched.

soccerdad: 1951D,52D,52D,53D,54D,55D,55D,56D,57D,58D Haven't been through them yet. I got a backlog of stuff to search LOL. I have a tendency to buy when I find the deal and go through them as I get to them. I will post anything cool in the "Cool Lincoln Roll Finds"

I would definately buy a mixed roll over a solid date roll. How many people are looking for solid rolls of 52d wheats. Yes I would buy them if they were cheap but mixed rolls would serve my purpose much better.

Mixed rolls, for sure. It's the thrill of the hunt, not knowing what's around the next corner.

I thought all Denver was pretty neat too. I only found one roll in all my searching that was all Denver, and that was a long time ago.
